An electric atmosphere surged through Rock City as five piece Blossoms thrived under the lights of a sold out venue and mosh pit after mosh pit to sing hits from their latest album Cool Like You.
The crowd at Rock City were ready to party and get sweaty, as the indie rock band from Stockport began their impressive 18 piece setlist with I Can’t Stand It, swiftly followed by Blow. An exciting start to the gig, both tracks were full of energy and lead singer Tom Ogden made the performances seem effortless.
How Long Will This Last with its catchy rhythm and lyrics was next, it certainly got the crowd going for the next hit Getaway. It might have been a slower number but that didn’t stop the excited crowd jumping around to it.
With one of the best melodies from their latest album, Unfaithful brought the mosh pit alive once again and Ogden’s vocals sounded as slick as they do on the recording. Keeping the crowd going Honey Sweet enticed the audience to sing along and have a boogey which they did with relish.
Not taking a break from the craziness of the mosh pit a sweaty audience really got into album title track Cool Like You, and tops were flying around all over the place. Love Talk was followed by I Just Imagined You and Cut Me And I’ll Bleed channelling a mixture of Oasis and Arctic Monkeys they showed why 2018 has been a pretty successful year for the five piece.
Encouraging the crowd to get on each other’s shoulders, which they obliged eagerly, Blown Rose played next. A song which has a rather similar medley to a certain Christmas number but with that rock edge. Stranger Still, probably the slowest starting number of the whole night followed next, it picked up pace as it went on and the audience reveled with it.
Between The Eyes was followed by an acoustic rendition of My Favourite Room, Ogden stood under the spotlight alone to the packed out audience. While it’s not the kind of song to reveal the depth of his vocals it showed how effortless his performances are, he made it look like he was just singing to a few friends rather than a sold out venue. The latter of the songs turned into a mashup of Wham!’s Last Christmas and Half The World Away by Oasis, it was hard to tell who sang it better Ogden or the audience (you can decide by watching the clip below!).
A short break followed was by the encore and the mosh pit was back with vengeance, as At Most A Kiss with its bass ridden instrumentals and funky beat sounded amazing as it rang through the venue.
Fans of The Smiths were pleased as a cover of their hit Bigmouth Strikes Again sounded pretty damn perfect and fit in as if it was one of their own tunes.
Their current biggest hit There’s A Reason Why got one of the biggest reactions (and mosh pits) and it’s easy to see why. The catchy and upbeat tune is a must to have a boogey and sing along to, and the crowd did not hold back.
The gig ended on their biggest hit Charlemagne. No one was left standing still and everyone that came to have a good time left having a good time. Its a tune which shows exactly what they’re about and why they’ve had a successful couple of years.
What a gig!
