You Me At Six step out their comfort zone with new album VI

You Me At Six are about to celebrate their 10th anniversary as one of the UK’s most successful bands. They’re celebrating by releasing their 6th studio album, stepping out their comfort zone to change the way you look at their music.

The band; lead singer Josh Franceschi, Max Helyer (guitar), Chris Miller (guitar), Matt Barnes (bass) and Dan Flint (drums) formed in 2004 as teens in Surrey, and have since gone on to have four Top 10 albums, sold out tours across the world, and received four UK Gold Records.

‘VI’ comes at a time when the band are looking to try something a bit different and show fans their versatility. Latest single from the album ‘Back Again’ is a prime example of that, replacing rock riffs with an indie-pop prowess. It’s a fun, upbeat song that show’s off their instrumental solos and Franceschi’s vocal range. It demonstrates their ability to adapt to a fast-moving music scene.

On the single, lead singer Josh says: “Back Again is quite a departure for us sonically. We took some risks. We wanted to soundtrack people’s weekends. It’s a song, lyrically, about recovery, but not from vices. From feeling lost within yourself. Feeling back, your friends & family feeling like they got their person back from adversity”

The band have not long released the video for 3am, another track from their upcoming album that is a masterpiece not only lyrically but in the way it tells a story. Like a mini movie set in three acts, it not only shows a darker twist musically but Franceschi pulls off a pretty impressive acting masterclass too.

On the video he says: “The idea came from watching Wolf Of Wall Street. In the film there is a scene where the main protagonist (Leonardo DiCaprio) has a split reality when under the influence of what he believes to be true and what is actually true. That just resonated with us.”

He added: “I worked quite closely with Dan Broadley (Director) as I found myself doing a lot of ‘acting’ in this video. It was new, and a challenge, but he gave me the confidence to embrace it and also have the freedom to go off script”

Directed by Dan Broadley, who’s also worked on videos for the likes of Skinny Living, Don Bronco and Mallory Knox, described what it was like working on the project with the band, he says: “I remember really early on in the process, we had this unhinged creative conversation about what we all wanted this video to be and how we wanted to push the boundaries of what people expected of You Me At Six”

He explains: “I recalled this amazing scene in The Wolf Of Wall Street where it shows Leo making it back home in his Lamborghini whilst totally off his head on drugs, however it later reveals what really happened… and the journey didn’t go as well as he remembered. I loved that idea and wanted to adapt it to a ‘night out’ scenario where Josh plays this bouncy alter-ego of himself. I think a highlight was persuading the guys to learn a full dance routine to perform at the climax of the song…”

Both 3am and Back Again are available to listen to now along with two other tracks I O U and Fast Forward ahead of the full album release on October 5th, which is available to pre-order here.

After the initial first three live shows celebrating their anniversary sold out in twenty minutes the band have released tickets to an extra seven live shows in the UK starting in Leeds on November 21, and ending in Nottingham on December 9.

An exciting time for fans as not only are the band releasing a new studio album and going on tour, but they’re using the knowledge and experience of having worked in the music scene for a decade to push the boundaries of their platform and release something really exciting and innovative in the YMAS world.
