REVIEW: Calum Scott at Rock City

Perhaps one of the most down to earth musicians to headline the Rock City stage, Calum Scott bared all emotions as he thrilled the crowd with edgy vocals and acoustic numbers.

Almost three years ago one performance on Britians Got Talent changed his life forever, now on his first solo headline tour Calum Scott has brought his trademark voice from the TV screen to the hearts of fans as he treats the crowd to songs from his debut album Only Human.

Opened by Daniel Docherty, the Glaswegian got the audience excited with his soulful singing as he pulled some fabulous faces playing some of the finest guitar. He’s definitely a talent to watch.

It took Calum a while to come on stage but when the 29 year-old from Hull began his set with Come Back Home, he got the energetic crowd on his side in no time. It was followed by album title track Only Human and Rhythm Inside, which cociedentally has one of the best melodies and beats on the album – and it didn’t disappoint live either.

Calum admitted to the audience his mission is to “dance a little and cry a lot” and with that in mind he performed a few slow numbers including You Are The Reason (which he dedicated to his grandma), Hotel Room and a very personal song he didn’t include on the album entitled No Matter What in which he wrote about coming out to his parents at a time he struggled with coming to terms with who he loved and how others judged him. True to his word after the performance he took a couple of moments to wipe away a few tears as the crowd cheered his name,

Calum performed a few acoustic numbers and told the crowd he loves this style of singing because it’s how he started making music. With this in mind he performed the first of two covers, Bob Dylan’s Not Dark Yet. A brilliant vocal performance, put in the spotlight with just a pianist on stage. It didn’t disappoint.

But it wasn’t all emotional songs, he picked up the eager crowd with Good To You, What I Miss Most (a track about his hometown Hull) and Give Me Something which gave the crowd a little something to dance about for a Friday night.

The encore contained first track from the album If Our Love Is Wrong and the song that changed his life, the beautiful rendition of Robyn’s Dancing On My Own. The crowd loved the closing number; it’s not surprising considering it was the most downloaded track of summer 2016.

It’s hard to fault him vocally, though he may be quite a static singer (he doesn’t use much of the stage) he still brings energy to his performance. If you can take anything away from his set it’s that he’s a humble guy who loves music.
