New Music Friday Review – 11th August

New Music Friday is my favourite day of the week in regards to discovering and listening to new music. I’ve discovered some of my favourite artists through it and it’s a brilliant of way to explore different genres and bands.

Discover my top hits, song of the day and my Friday no no. There’s a few more than normal this week because there’s been a lot a good tracks released, here is this weeks..

My song of the day..

LAY WITH ME – ANDY BROWN

Previously the front man of Lawson, this is the first solo single by Brown. Produced and recorded in Nashville, USA, it’s an easy to listen to track, which is also very catchy! It shows off his versatility and has a little country edge to it – as the acoustic version I’m excited to hear the full studio version when it’s released. The chorus really shows off his vocal range and amazing tone of voice, the high notes in particular are something special. Having watched Andy grow from supporting bands in 2011, to releasing solo music I am really excited to see what he is going to release next, and with this track I expect great things!

This weeks new hit #1

HOW SOON IS THE DAWN – JAKE BUGG

If you’re from Nottingham (or anywhere else for that matter!) and haven’t heard of Jake Bugg you must be living on another planet! Bugg hasn’t released anything new in a while so I was excited to hear this song from his upcoming third album. As he describes this song has both an element of darkness and joy about it, a mix which when put together creates something special. Bugg’s voice has has drawn critics to his feet from an early age and this song shows why he gets rave reviews. Different from what he’s released before, it’s quite a sweet song that will have your toes tapping – a bluesy, old-school kind of a track, a great single and I’m excited for his next album.

This weeks new hit #2

NO ANSWERS (ACOUSTIC) – AMBER RUN

I love the original version of this song and so was really excited to hear the acoustic version of this track – and I love it just as much as the original (and maybe a tiny bit more!) Lyrically and melody wise this track is clever, it’s simple yet seems complex, which shows how well crafted the song is. Acoustic tracks always expose the singers voice, but Joe Keough’s  vocals will really make your head turn when you hear them – haunting and powerful, he really uses the depth of this song to show his range, going from innocent and soft, to raw and powerful. It’s a song which really shows the talent of all band members.

This weeks new hit #3

WOULD YOU BE SO KIND -DODIE

The innocence of this song makes it stand out from some of the other tracks I have listened to and that’s why it’s one of my hot hits. Lyrically it is crafted really well, one line in particular stands out: ‘If you would be so kind, please fall in love with me’. The tone of her voice make this song raw and you really feel like you’re going on a journey with her. The best thing about this song however, is how simple the track is; just a girl singing with her ukulele. A track which also works really well because it’s so British, what’s not to love?

This weeks new hit #4

LET ME IN – SKINNY LIVING

One of my favourite things about this track for me is the beginning, the guitar medley begins with a real simple set of chords before the lead vocals kick in almost gracefully. Ryan Johnston (lead singer) has a really strong and powerful voice, and when he sings it almost looks as if he’s not even trying. It’s sweet song, but there is definitely nothing wrong with that – one which will probably make all the girls swoon (I certainly did a bit!). This is a song which will definitely be on repeat!

This weeks new hit #5

SOMEDAY – PALE SEAS

Pale Seas were a band I had not heard of previous to this song, they remind me slightly of Coasts and instrumentally are very strong. The guitar solos to the end of the track are really worth listening to, and the lead singer has a really edgy voice with a great tone. While I really like this track, it’s a song that shows real promise for the band in the future; they have all the elements to make some really exciting tracks, and I for one am looking forward to seeing what they will produce.

This weeks new hit #6

BLESSINGS (ACOUSTIC) – TOM WALKER

The tone of Tom Walker’s voice really is something special, and the acoustic version of Blessings really show every little detail of his voice – and it does not disappoint. This song is full of sass, something which really stands out in this version. Vocally it’s hard to fault Walker, it’s a brilliant song which captures your attention and gets you in the groove. From this version it is easy to see how amazing Walker will be performing live and I’m really excited to hear what else he will release in the future considering how raw and emotive his voice is.

This weeks new hit #7

BE YOUR MAN – RHYS LEWIS

This was one of the first songs that came up on the New Music Friday playlist and instantly I loved it. The vocals are raspy and raw which really make this track stand out. It’s a really easy to listen to song and the lyrics really tell a story, it makes you want to carry on listening to know what happens next; something which makes for a powerful song and here it is really done successfully. Lewis’s voice entrances you right from the beginning, drawing you in to listen to the rest of the song – a great ballad which has been executed brilliantly.

My new music Friday no no..

DOWN UP – WiDE AWAKE

The start of this song really isn’t too bad as far as dance tracks goes, however after the first verse the track goes slowly downhill and it really does nothing for me. I think even if this song was played in a club I wouldn’t really be into it, and that’s always when you know that a track is not the best. I can see what they are trying to do here, but they just really do not pull it off and it sounds yet again like every other dance track by the end of it, one for sure you would skip.

I listened to a lot of tracks that have been released within the past week to pick my top tracks. The new music Friday playlist (on Spotify) is a great way to support upcoming artists and discover new and exciting tracks.
